Is that all of the information you have? Do you recall any scenes? That's two decades to cover, and a lot of Westerns and outdoors adventures were released during that time. It would help me research/remember if you could provide a scene or, better, scenes from it, especially the storyline.
As it is now, we could offer you dozens of films that have such a situation.

I think you are talking about a man who built a log cabin by his own hand on a lake in Alaska and really built it by hand. I have watched it a few times with my husband and it is always on PBS and I think it is called Alone in the Wilderness. I suggest you do a search on their website. I am sorry I don't remember the name but the actual documentary is one of the gifts you get when you make a donation.

there was a show filmed in the 70's about a man who was accused of a murder he didn't, do, so he ran off to the mountains, built a log cabin and lived there with nature. he raised an orphan grizzly bear cub named Ben. he was one with nature. it starred dan haggerty as GRIZZLY ADAMS. it also starred denver pyle, you know him as uncle jessie on the dukes of hazzard. he played a guy named mad jack, and he had a mule he run around with named number 7, he was a mtn man that would come down and visit grizzly adams from time to time. i used to love that show. still do in fact.

I seem to remember that the 60's series, Cheyenne, starring Clint Walker, had him living in a log cabin.
