40 degrees is good, very good, your fridge works great, as for the knobs both fridge and freezer should be at the half way mark each my two knobs are 1 thru 10 each and both are set at 5, last week i put some frozen meat in the fridge to thaw it but after a few day's it was still frozen so I checked the knobs and sure enough somebody had raised them both to 10, no wonder the freezer was even growing sludge, so I asked around and found that my 15 year old daughter had raised them to see what happens. I also have a 5 dollor thermometer in each and during winter it reaches to 30 degrees cold.

My Frigidaire refrigerator has a factory setting that works great by keeping food at the right temperature while not using too much energy. However, if your refrigerator gets a lot of use during the day with constant opening and closing, I would set it a little colder. I think that the "factory" setting is in the range of 40-45 degrees F. On a side note, don't forget to put your leftovers into the refrigerator as soon as possible; below 140 degrees, food has 4 hours of cumulative "life".

if its full and the full food is cool, and its just a fridge (not a fridge- with a freezer plastic box shoved in the top) it needs to be on somewhere between 3 and 5 depending on the temperature outside. If its hot outside, higher numbers, if its cold outside lower numbers (by outside I mean out side the fridge, i.e kitchen, not the out side the house!)
If its an empty fridge between 5 and 7.
If its a fridge freezer, dont even bother with anything above 5, it will just freeze up and die.

Between 3 and 5 Celsius is the recommended setting for fridges. It's setting No.8 on my fridge so I'm somewhat puzzled as to what the first seven are for. It's only thanks to a fridge thermometer that I know the correct setting.

Find a small thermometer and set it in the fridge overnight. 38-43 F is normal.

5°C should be ideal, shouldn't go higher than 8°C or lower than 1°C

5 degrees centigrade is the normal temperature of the fridge.
This can increase when you fill it up after shopping!
