I had just gotten my first Pap test. I had gotten my physical and learned how to give myself a breast exam. That I was okay with. There was no one else in there with me, and I got a rectal exam(ewww!) I was told by the RN that it was standard procedure to do that. I don't think that it was. Is it?

Many women get a rectal when they have their yearly pelvic exam. This is done to check the posterior wall of the vagina for masses. I am 36 years old, and I have had many pelvic exams, done by different medical professionals. Some of them have included a rectal exam, and others have not.

"Finally, a rectal exam may also be performed. Still wearing a glove, your health clinician will insert a finger in the vagina while another well-lubricated finger is gently inserted into the rectum. This is done to determine if there are any masses in the anal canal and also to feel the uterus, cervix, and ovaries. Again, try to relax. If you want to refuse the rectal exam, please let your clinician know."

"Sometimes a rectal exam is performed. Your doctor inserts a gloved finger into the rectum to detect any tumors or other abnormalities."

"Clinicians will commonly complete the exam by doing a rectal examination, placing one finger in the rectum and one finger in the vagina. The reason for this is the clinician can feel much higher and deeper in the pelvis to make sure everything is normal."

It isn't actually a rectal exam - it's a type of test when you apply a tiny bit of stool to a specially treated paper, and add special solution to check for blood in the stool.
It is a very easy way to be sure you have no rectal bleeding, which can be a sign of colon cancer.

Sometimes they do that. You should not have to get it every time you get a pap though. If the person doing your exam was a man then you are supposed to have someone in the room with you like a nurse. If it was a woman that I think it was ok.

Important: was your doctor a man or woman? Male Doctors/ RN's are required to have another female in the room. I have never heard of a rectal exam being standard at a GYN check up.
