17 and 26.

Find the factors of 442: 1 442, 2 221, 13 34, 17 26.
Look for pairs that add up to 43.

Call one number x, the other y.

Product is: xy = 442.

Sum is: x + y = 43. Thus, x = 43 - y

Substituting into top equation: (43 - y)y = 442.

43y - y^2 = 442; is same as y^2 - 42y + 442 = 0.

Factors into: (y - 26)(y - 17)

So, y is either 26 or 17.

If y = 26, then x = 17.

If y = 17, then x = 26.

In either case, 26 and 17 are the solutions.

Let the one no=x
so the other=43-x
Also x(43-x)=442
or 43x-x^2-442=0
or x^2-43x+442=0
or x^2-26x-17x+442=0
or x(x-26)-17(x-26)=0
or (x-26)(x-17)=0
so x=26 & x=17
CHK: 26+17=43
& 26*17=442 ans

1. Write equations and solve for one variable
xy=442→x=442/y
x+y=43→x=43 - y
2. Set the two equations equal
442/y=43-y
3. Solve for y
y=26 and 17

let one of the number be x

x(43-x)=442
x^2 - 43x + 442 = 0
(x - 17)(x - 26) = 0
the numbers are 17 and 26
