I am considering self publishing, or I could go with Vantage Press, or Booksurge (of Amazon). I think it costs $500 for an ISBN, and I am trying to cut costs but I must have an ISBN for my books, and I would like to get at least 40% of the sale value per book; with Booksurge I would not get the 40% but then they would pay for the ISBN number. Or I could just have a Print house produce my book. Any ideas?

Self-publishing is not a great idea because many credible newspapers & magazines will not review a self-published book.
An ISBN should not cost anywhere near $500. It's a pain in the neck to obtain one - a freelance editor if you can find one might do that for you for a fee but not a $500 fee.
I'm leery of Booksurge, they don't always produce when they say they would & there are proofing issues with their work.
For a first book it's most important that it be well designed & laid out, and carefully proofed.
