Ugh, my calculus teacher always give us pop quizzes! We never know when we're gonna have a quiz! We just walk in to class, and he says, oh, you have a quiz. And I'm like what?! But I didn't study! Then I end up failing the quiz because I didn't remember what we learned. So why should teachers be allowed to do this?

But I do my homework! The quizzes he give is like from stuff that we learned 2 weeks, and then I remember the stuff that I learned the day before!

Random punishment and reward is one of the best methods known to psychologically cause you to be always prepared.

If they announced the quiz the day before, you'd study only then.

They can't quiz you on material you haven't "learned", so you should be safe. It's aggravating, but hey - it's to reinforce that you gotta know it all the time you're in class (even if you don't use every day in your life).

Life is like that - pop quizzes on ethics come up every day, when you're cut off in traffic, when your roommate leaves change out, when you flirt.

I would guess that they should be allowed to do this because it is effective in inspiring some to keep up with the material on a daily basis and not wait until the exam to cram.(which is useless for true learning on a long term basis)

And if people repeatedly do poorly on such quizzes, it would give him a very clear picture of the student and the choices he/she makes. Imagine a rat who gets shocked each time he does a particular activity, let's say touches a button (or fails a quiz), and each day he comes back and touches the button (or fails the quiz) and gets a shock (or the shock of an "E")......well if that rat never learns to do the thing that would stop the pain, such as not touching the button (or studying) what does that tell you about the rat?

Study! It is much more impressive than whining.

Well, you snooze you lose. Honestly, do you think you'll get through life being able to face only the things you were told about in advance? That would be extremely complacent of you. What your teacher is also trying to teach you is called "the unexpected", and sometimes it's great, sometimes it sucks. Whatever curve life throws at you, you've got to face it the best you can. Lucky for you, you can start practicing with pop quizzes. Keep your brain sharp and don't wait to be warned to be awake and aware.

teachers don't give pop quizzes to stress you out or to embarrass you... they do it to make sure you are understanding and retaining the things they are teaching you. if you can't remember it from a previous lesson, however long ago, then it lets your teacher know that that concept needs to be reviewed, especially when midterms and finals are coming up. it's an honest and fairly accurate gauge of how well you understand the information without having to cram.

The object of education is to learn. Your instructor wants to ensure that you have the information offered soaked away and not just on an immediate playback system.

well, it is to prepare you for the real world and just college. college is going to suck if you aren't prepared and that is why teachers give pop quizes. so that you learn to go over everything you learn in that class.

Yes. This keeps you honest. I work in the public school and see many kids copying each others homework papers. It is difficult to learn by copying. It is difficult to learn when you do not practice what you are learning.

It's probably also a diagnostic tool to see how well the class,
as a whole, is learning...

Well because they can...what better reason do you need...If I had a horde of kids some who did well others who slacked off I'd love to catch those who do nothing with their pants down (so to speak)
