Star Trek had a vision of a universe in which peace and harmpony was a good thing, and that there should be a way in which we all can get along.
Star Wars was about good fightng evil, especially when evil is big and powerful and taking over the universe.
Star Wars destructive capabilities could blow away anything ins Star Trek, but Trek had transporters and cloaking devices.
Trek has Klingons and Picard quoting Shakespeare. Star Wars had Yoda talking backwards and Annakin misquoting George W. Bush.
Trek inspired a generation of peace-and-brotherhood loving hippies, and even had SCA folks carrying "I Grok Spok" signs in protest against its cancellation.
Star Wars inspired a still-unsuccessful anti-ballistic missile defence system.
Kirk got more girls than Solo.
Uhura wore shorter skirts than Leia, but Leia had that metal bikini.
Trek alumni have gone on to do more TV, movies, Broadway, records, and commercials, and have embraced their cult icon/pop-culture status. Aside from Harrison Ford, Natalie Portman, and Ewan MacGregor (and the old English guys, who don't count because they were brought in for respectability and star power) everyone else is still looking for work.
Star Trek: a new movie every couple of years, each alternating one better than the one before it.
Star Wars: two six-year trilogies, separated by more than a decade, with each successive episode made after the second one (that is "Episode V, The Empire Strikes Back") generally acknowledged to be not quite as good as the first two, not to mention the almost pointless tweaking of the "special editions."

I've heard very little (if any) good about the Star Trek movies.
Star Wars wins my vote.

This question has been asked forever it seems. Each of these SCI FI ideas are great. I prefer the future that Gene Roddenberry has invisioned, but both are outstanding.
Death Vader has to one of the best villians ever to grace the screen, but "TREK" has had some good ones, How about the " BORG " cant get more ruthless than that. As long as we as SCI FI Fans remember both, they both will go on forever.
