Superior Wisconsin is named after Lake Superior.
America is named after Americus Vespucci. He was an average explorer but was a leading mapmaker or he employed a good mapmaker.

Well, as others have said, Superior is names after lake Superior.
As for America... we are named after the continent. The continent was names by the german map maker Martin Waldseemüller, who named it after Amerigo Vespucci, using the latinized version of his name.
The leading argument is Amerigo was the first to discover, what is now South America, continued much further south than previously thought. Thus proving it was not India as claimed by many (Columbus continued to claim this till his death).
