There's one near where I work--Naugatuck (properly "nuquttuq" if you're using modern Mohegan.) The actual translation is "a place where a single item in a set stands," but for some reason people here say it means "lone tree by the fishing hole."

Back in Tennessee, there was Egwani (from "equoni," our Cherokee word for "river," this was a resort area.) Then there's Etowah (Cherokee pronunciation of Mvskoke "tvlwv," meaning "town,") I could go on forever.

The name "Tennessee" is actually "Tlanusiyi" in Cherokee, and it literally means "Leech place," after towns along the river. The name was so common it stuck to both the river and the state.
