Gotta meet all those cranky constituents (like you lot) and accept bribes, er, campaign contributions.

Speaking of campaign contributions - the Armenian community has been voracious about this issue, and pushing their reps in Congress hard. They're well-organized and well-funded. A friend of mine worked in the consulate in Armenia, and if she denied a visa because of oh, I don't know, US law, she often got calls from Congress demanding she reverse her decision and hand over the visa to so-and-so who is an important third cousin in a constituent's family and needs his B-1. All the time. These folks don't care about driving a wedge between the U.S. and an important NATO ally - they're going to squander all their political capital getting that resolution passed, and they've got plenty of capital to squander.

How we fix this problem? We need another round of serious campaign finance reform. It's not good when the connected minority gets to wag the dog in these situations - whether it's AIPAC, the NRA or the AARP. That isn't democracy - it's oligarchy.

They do a lot more than that, watch C-Span and see for yourself. A lot of their activities are very slow and non-eventful so you may need to buy a case of red bull to stay awake.

I wish they had their job. Retire in two terms, sit on my butt and do nothing important and have long long vacation times and vote to raise my own paycheck.

Sounds like a dream job to me.

They spend most of their time planning on getting re-elected.

It's very hard work.
