I know this sounds really dumb but I was wondering about it while writing an email

It means POST SCRIP. That is Latin for "after writing."

It made a lot more sense in the old days when you hand wrote a big long letter and then remembered something else. You didn't want to just rip it up and replace it so you just added more at the end of the letter. Nowadays with word processing where you can just drop any added text right in the middle of a note, it is not as useful.

The PS stands for post script. After a letter was written and signed, if the author wanted to write more they would add it to the bottom of the letter with the PS (post script).
