Grass can and does get crowded to the point where it doesn't grow well. Have you ever noticed a lawn at the edge of a sidewalk that sticks up in a 3-inch or so thatch, where only the top of the grass is green? That's what happens when grass gets overcrowded.

One annual treatment for mature lawns to keep them green and lush is to dethatch the lawn. You can do it manually with a stiff, 4-tined rake or they actually make dethatching machines (I've seen gardeners use them at an apartment complex I once lived in).

If you use the rake, you pull out the thatch and rake off as much as you can manually. Then you go over what's left of the thatch with a lawn mower and re-seed the lawn. A lot of the old existing grass will now come up green and the seedlings will fill in the rest.

grass is just an underground plant with the leaves just sticking out of the ground
also big plants require more nutrients to stay healthy out in the air where there are no nutrients for them
while grass only sticks its leaves out to get sunlight and carbon-dioxide only

grass does have a very strong and weblike root that could collect nutrition from the habitat surrounding it easily, also because the leaves are long and each plant has many leaves, it could collect enough light to produce its energy from sunlight.
if you need to learn about grass like plants who co-habit with each other, there are many sources online
good luck
