You are not damaging your brain.. you will pass out before you reach that stage. Loss of oxygen (not breathing) will cause a 'normal' person to pass out with in 4 to 6 minutes with brain damage occuring at about the 10 minute mark and permenant damage at the 15 minute mark. This is of course dependent upon many variables but a good rule of thumb.

Now...let's talk about what you are doing and your concerns about brain damage. Your feelings that you have when you surface is due to the fact you are right at the brink of passing out. While that in itself has no real direct consequences, the dire consequences will occur when you screw up and push yourself past the point wo where you pass out and then body's involuntary muscle kick in and you take a DEEP breath of water.... and DIE!

Stop doing this underwater. If you want to try to see how long you can hold breath, do it in a safe environment.. NOT under water AND with someone there to assist if you need help.

Hope this helps and that you heed my warnings!

The blackness you are seeing is probably from oxygen deprivation. It is a signal that you are going to harm yourself if you continue. The 2.25 seconds sounds really short, though.

Ummm....yeah. Oxygen deprivation kills brain cells.
