A shovel full of gold bearing gravel/sand in a large (15-16 inch wide) pan, put water in- swish it around to wash out the lighter soils/granules, and the gold stays in the bottom of the pan. It's labor intensive, but the prospector can move at will from site to site, carrying his "pan" and using it until he finds signs of gold and then setting up a more permanent sluicing operation.

gold is HEAVY
mud is soluble
panning involves a thing like a frying pan or wok
add the mud stones and particles of gold and water
move the container so that the heaviest parts end up at one end and surplus mud and water go over the edge .....(panning)
