I need to replace the heater core in my 1997 Pontiac Grand AM. My brother in law says I need to take the dash out etc. I've never done it before . Any tips? What tools would I need? Best Answer for tools.

The heater core on these are relatively easy after you have done a couple. It takes a little time to find where all the screws are that hold the covers in place. I can do them in about an hour. It will take a rookie a good part of a day. Air powered tools are a real bonus. A 1/4 inch drive air ratchet is ideal. Get a good manual read it, and away you go. Have fun!
By the way,the dash does not need to come out.

Tools, use everything you got. LOL!
Usually you can get by with a Phillips and Slotted Screwdriver and a Socket Set with a few extensions and a universal joint for awkward places.
Go to Auto-Zone or a Part Store and buy a manual!!!! It only about $15-20 @ Auto-Zone and be a lot of help. I not know this particular car off hand, but, some the heater core is behind the AC Core/Evaporator. This is a pain, but, with thought, sometimes you can get it out without disconnecting the AC and having to recharge the system.
