Why are a large portion of single mothers on America African-American?

Please do not interpret this question the wrong way. This is in no way racist, but rather an observation that I'd like your honest opinions about.

First of all, a large portiion of single mothers of African American are single because we choose not to be abuse, downgraded. Some others reason is her choice. Some single mothers are youths having babies out of wedlock. This is part some of the portion that you are going by. In our society the men of African American they to make choices of bearing children with a single mother and they are not mature to father those children. I beleive that if each single African American mother would learn that raising a family isn't a game to keep a man. Some of these same women make choices that are not positive. If we donot teach our young women to reach toward a goal of what they want to do in life and give them a chance to do reach that goal. Some of these single parents are under 20 yrs old. I beleive that we need to go back to the old school, in teaching our people to educate others that are no educated about parenting. It could be that some single women don't want to be married to raise a family or get married. It's there choice whatever they can handle in life. I got married after college because my parents school me on being a parent. I wasn't ready or even thinking about marriage or guys, to be committed too. I want to have a degree first. In slavery the old and young women were taken away for the use of the slave owner. That could be a portion of a history legacgy. Sometimes after having a relationship with a woman and she becomes preganant he is gone to another to do the same thing. Hey we have to stop, and look around us are we really ready to raise children and not have a men to help us raise them. Each women that decides to have children let her be able to raise that child with The father as a family. FAmMILY CONSIST OF MOTHER ,FATHER AND CHILD.

maybe God knew we were strong enough to handle our business without balling up in a knot and dying if we didn't have a man to help. There may be a greater number of single African American moms, but there are a greater number of other ethnic groups on welfare and public assistance. The problem is not being single the problem is finding men worthy to be called A MAN. and that's in ALL RACES!!!! And by the way I'm a Married Educated Black Woman..

It's actually a very interesting topic. If you are really interested, go and read up on it. One of the major reasons is the unemployment rate amongst African-American men. So many African-Americans fall into the lowest socio-economic category and live in areas where there aren't any low-skill jobs. The women (like most women) want kids, but it's better for them financially to avoid live-in relationships with their men. Why? If they live with the men, they and their kids are living on his unemployment benefits, if they don't, they live on her single mother's pension.

Where did you get your statistics? I'd be willing to bet that being an unwed mother is not only an African American thing,but every race in the world. For one thing, African Americans are still a minority and to validate your question, they would have to be every other young African American girl.

I am a white woman. That being said, I have always admired the strength of African American women. I believe that they are the leaders in this arena. I have never known one who wasn't very strong and quite capable of taking care of her business and her children on her own. Perhaps this is the reason that many of them choose to have children on their own. I think that white women are following their lead on this and not settling for a life of misery, just so that they can stay in a marriage or a relationship that isn't working. It's about time that all of us understood that we have choices, not the least of which is who we choose to spend our lives and raise our children with.

The rate of single mothers is on the rise and it has no bearing on race, its unfortunate. Maybe you see more african-american single mothers because of your location. Where I live the number of caucasion single mothers outweighs the african americans.

I, myself have noticed that Single parenting is on the rise.

I think stereotypes do play some parts (some believe their, you know what, is not big enough to satisfy a black woman's big haha), Also, black girls are stereotyped as being loud and aggressive and feel that Asian men are softer and can't handle a black women like that. I am black and my bf is Korean. I love Asian guys! He told me that a lot of his Asian friends LOVE black girls, they are too scared because of rejection and feel that black women are not interested because they go for rough guys (what they see in rap videos). Most Black women stick to their own too and if they date outside their race, go for white or hispanic because it was put out there as a norm. Black girls dating Asian men is rare so it's going to take some time for it to be the "norm". Maybe it's criticizm too because I introduced him to my cousins, they started to laugh as compared to when I use to go with a white guy. It annoyed me, I was wondering what was so funny. I guess people see it as laughable and the Asian guys/Black girls don't feel like going through the drama. Me, I don't care. I get stares but it makes me stronger! I llooovveeee my Jun ki! ^^

wel honey u r quite right.i dont kno why.fewer ppl like to own up to responsibility.even fewer have an education.wat do u expect then?the responsible ones marry other from races in a bid to avoid all the 'bad' things that usually happen.i am black and i hav nothing against my race but damn!most african-american men r irresponsible and if i lived in the US,i would never hook up with any of them!the good ones r really hard to find.

African Americans are clearly reacting? Why are most African Africans born from married parents. There is something wrong here.
