I have been working for a company for 6 months. I have never called in sick until I have gotten sick about 2 weeks ago. I went to work today and talked to my boss and human resource person. When I told them That all i acn do is sit at the front desk, greet customers and even anwers phones. I told them I am not sure how long I will be to sick to work harder. THey told me that I needed a doctors note and they will give me a new wage that would reflect how much work i can now do. They sent me home and the assistant manager told me if i would have been smiling while talking to my boss it would have went better. I was on the verge of tears while talking to boss and hr person because thay are mean nasty people. Can they dock my pay? what should i do? if they cant do this who do i talk to? i was hired at this wage with hopes that i would be able to do more. i learned a lot faster than others. i still feel like i do more than most there. please help with good advise.

They can not dock your pay, however they can change your pay-rate as long as it remains above the minimum wage. The only limitation is that they can not change it retroactively, the change can only take place after you are informed.

If you were hired at that wage in the hope you would learn to do more, and you just walked in and told them not only could you NOT do more, you could only do less, then the hopes are shattered all around, aren't they?

If you are only able to do a certain job, then you should be paid what the others are paid for doing that job.

They still have to find someone to do your own job.

When you are well enough to do your old job, if they are holding it for you (did you ask if they will do that?) then they will bump you back up.

Of ocurse, they could have just let you go and told you to re-apply when you are healthy.

I think they have been more then considerate from your description.

Maybe you have some sort of partial disability insurance that would kick in for a while to cover the lost wages?

It sounds like they are re-classifying you with something that is downgraded what you previously did, then it is legal.
