I didn't want to eat more but had to unless I wanted to get my butt beat. I came up with a good way to get rid of the food though. It may sound gross but this is what my young mind came up with: I'd make sure to set the table with a glass for me to use that could not be seen threw. I'd finish my drink and the food that I didn't want to eat, like brussel sprouts, I'd put in my mouth, act like I was chewing and then go to take a drink. I'd spit the uneaten food into the glass. When my plate was empty, which it had to be before I could leave the table, then I'd remove my dishes and wash them and my parents dishes, which was my job to do so it worked out good and I never got caught.

If you didn't finish it you got it for the next meal. With 8 kids you couldn't afford to throw out food in my house. People could learn a lot from the old days and do this now then kids wuoldn't turn out so spoilt

I would tell my daughter to eat 2 more bites of this and 3 more bites of that and she could be done. By the time she ate that, it was all almost gone. She laughs about it now.

If I was full, I was allowed to be excused once everyone was done eating, but we only ate as a family, so If I got hungry later, i would just have to wait.

No my mum never said that unless i only ate a coulpe of spoonfulls (3) she would if you eat another couple of spoonfulls then you can have something nice later for desert. Sometimes i did, sometimes i didn't.
It sounds a bit like blackmail.

I was always encouraged to eat all the food on my plate, but we served ourselves so it taught me to have a small portion first and have a second helping if still hungry.

i remember sitting there for ages, my mum used to press my forehead and told me because it was still soft it means i've still got room. I would be up the table for ages chewing that last mouth full.

When I said I was full, I meant it. As long I helped to rinse off my plate or put up for leftovers, the mother didn't argue.
