3w² - 40w - 187; you do 3 x 187 = 561
now you need factors of 561 that multiply to -40 and replace -40w with them. (11 and 51)

3w² - 51w + 11w - 187
3w(w - 17) + 11(w - 17)
(3w + 11)(w - 17)

Once you figure out that 187 = 11 x 17, the rest is pretty straightforward: (3w + 11)(w -17).
