What should you do if say a black bear attacks you?

You don't need to outrun the bear. You only need to outrun one of the people standing next to you.

If you are in bear country..it is best to try and avoid an encounter at all...make plenty of noise while hiking, wear a "bear bell", clap your hands, sing, talk, etc. Also carry bear mace. If you do see a bear..do NOT run! Back away slowly facing the bear..you can speak in an even tone to the bear as you back away. If the bear charges you must still hold your ground. Many bears will bluff a charge and never actually make body contact. If the bear attacks, get on your belly with arms over your head. The bear may still be bluffing and may stop the attack as soon as it starts. If the attack continues..only then do you turn over and try and fight back going for vulnerable parts such as eyes and nose.

If there is a chance of bears then you should wear a bell. That will alert any wildlife and they should stay clear. Most bear attacks come from when they have been startled by a person walking up to them unnoticed. Pepper spray or mace just gets them ticked.
Playing dead kind of works but you have to protect your neck and head. That is what they go after.
The best policy is to try and prevent it from happening in the first place.
