the name Ashlyn (Ashlynne, Ashlynn)? My DF thought of this name and he really likes it. I'm undecided- I like it, but I don't love it. Also what do you think of Preston Shuler for a boy? Thanks!!

I don't like the whole Ashlyn name because it makes me think Ashley which is way too popular. I like the name Preston but not Shuler.

When I think of the names Ashlyn and Preston Shuler, they remind of the names of the kids who were rich, blonde, hung out with guys named Blake, Biff and Chip and wore sweater vests to school and made everyone's lives miserable. I don't really like either names.

Ashlyn sounds more like a boy's name. Not good for a girl. and too gilry for a boy. And Preston Shuler is nice. Congradulations first off. I just had a baby girl two weeks ago. And I had gone through a million boy names and no girls names. It was really hard. My husband and I couldn't agree on any name for her. I liked Madison, McKenzie, and Hailey. Also Neveah heaven spelled backwards. Natalie and Bonnie are cute too. Our Daughter has an exotic first name and an ordinary middle name so that she can choose which she would like to go by when she gets older. For a boy I like the names Thomas, Michael, and Matthew. Good luck.

Ashlyn sounds lovely. Preston Shuler does not sound as nice.

Ashlyn and its variants are not, IMHO, terribly sophisticated. I might use it as a middle name.

Preston is okay. Is Shuler the last name, a family name or a version of the Danish name Schuyler, pronounced Skyler? If it is a family name, it's fine. If you're going for Schuyler/Skyler? I'd rethink and choose something a bit toned down. Two such current names together strikes me as a little much.

Aisling or Aislinn (if you want to guarantee the "lin" ending sound) is a lovely name with a great history. It means "dream, vision" in Irish Gaelic, and was used to refer to a certain style of poetry which personified Ireland as a beautiful maiden in distress. You can see (and hear) more about it at these links.

Ashlynn, Ashlynne, etc. simply don't appeal to me nearly as much. Although they can be considered Anglicized forms of Aisling, they simply lack the same beauty and substance the traditional spelling(s) hold. And with Aislinn -- same ASH-lin pronunciation, in case that wasn't clear -- you have the added benefit of being able to point out the wonderful meaning behind the name, rather than it simlpy coming across as "another Ashley, but with an equally-common -lyn suffix tacked on." Because that is generally all the history behind Ashlyn itself, as most are unfamiliar with the link to Aisling.

So while Ashlyn and the rest just seem already-dated variations of Ashley and part of the Ash- trend in general (don't forget Ashton!), Aislinn would seem a lovely, even refreshing choice. Funny how a simple spelling can affect perception. ;)

I'm with you.
I like it, but I don't love it.

I love Preston for a boy.
If Shuler is a family name or something along those lines, keep it...if not, try something else. It always means more when families are involved.
