I have a Jeep Cherokee and I've noticed small drops of oil on the ground underneath where the rear differential is. I have an appointment w/my mechanic this Monday. Is it safe to drive the vehicle until then?

If it's just a few drops that you can wipe up with a paper towel you're fine.

Now if it's a puddle that needs to be soaked up with cat litter and the puddle is a foot wide, then I'd be kind of leary about driving it too far.

Your rear end holds a little over a gallon, so a small leak souldn't be a problem.

How long has it been leaking - obviously if it has been leaking a long time it could have all leaked out!! If it is a new leak then yes, it should be fine. Might be worth crawling under there with a socket and make sure it isn't just a bunch of loose bolts from improper tightening during the last service.

I would check the fluid level if it has been leaking a long time but if it just started dropping a few drops you will be safe until Monday.

Yes, it is safe, a couple drops wont hurt any, your diff holds 5 pints which is 2 1/2 quarts of 80/90 oil.

accident. The thump and the "launch" could be the transmission performing all jeep-like. could be quite worth it to have the diff gasket replaced. each from time to time that's in common terms a question of loosening the bolts and making use of sealant, no longer something substantial. the undertaking to bear in mind is that if lubricant is leaking out, in case you off-street it, water might leak in, which could be lots worse. so have it inspected and resealed, it will final longer.
