President Bush and his government are opposing the resolution calling the murder of 1.5 million people in Armenia a genocide, all because "Turkey is a valuable military ally". I am European and find it very hard to understand why the truth should be subdued for the sake of diplomatic advantage. Can someone please explain this to me? Is having Turkey as an ally in a possible further military involvement in the far east more important than to condemn their genocide?

Seeing the answers I wonder the following:

Germany was not in its current form during WW2, Hitler wasn't even German but Austrian. Still not a day goes by without references to Nazi Germany in the British tabloid press, and try telling just a single jew that "it happened 60 years ago" makes the jewish genocide an issue not worth talking about for the sake of diplomacy, were the German government to deny everything. Not that they would ever do such a thing (talking about sane governments).

Plus, if Turkey were not involved, how come the Turkish people are protesting against the resolution everywhere?

My point is that the truth should never be suppressed for the sake of one's own advantage. It happens way to often, just look at China downplaying all that is going on in Burma at the moment for another recent example, or all the other involvements of the US with "insane nations" in the far east as long as it suits their purposes. I'm simply sick of a policy of lies and deception all over the world by the most powerful of countries.

If we can say the Armenian genocide shouldn't count because it was 100 +/- yrs ago then can we say the jewish genocide in ww2 doesn't matter in another 30 +/- years?

FDR and Harry Truman--Democrats--turned a blind eye at the Soviet Union for its part in the Holocaust simply because it was an ally in WWII. DItto for China. And how about the U.S.'s own turn at genocide aka "The Indian Wars" of the 1800s?

Politics is a powerful force. It can make even the most heinous crime look acceptable in the right light. Even abortion: the killing of unborn babies simply for the sake of convenience.

The Armenian genocide was a terrible thing. but it was acentury ago. for once I agree with Bush--there's no point in beating this dead horse. Especially since the current Turkish state didn't even exist at the time and is in no way responsible.

Bush doesn't want anyone to call him out on the genocide currently occurring in Iraq either.

OMG......one more example of damned if you do and dammed if you don't.....

I am sick to death of everyone criticizing every move our President makes....

He goes to war and does not choose diplomacy.....He chooses diplomacy to stay in the good graces of an ally...no matter what...someone is going to whine and complain.

Nothing he does will ever be enough for those who refuse to see any redeeming qualities in the man...

Don't you have enough problems in your own country....shouldn't you worry about them...and stop trying to jump on board the "I hate Bush train"

I am American and find it very hard to understand why this is any of your business...Diplomatic enough for you?

Who cares what a Euro-coward thinks. Learn how to win a war for once without our help, then you can run your mouth.

Clinton did the same thing.

It is not genocide. It was war...brutal, but war.
