President Bush and his government are opposing the resolution calling the murder of 1.5 million people in Armenia a genocide, all because "Turkey is a valuable military ally". I am European and find it very hard to understand why the truth should be subdued for the sake of diplomatic advantage. Can someone please explain this to me? Is having Turkey as an ally in a possible further military involvement in the far east more important than to condemn their genocide?

Seeing the answers I wonder the following:
Germany was not in its current form during WW2, Hitler wasn't even German but Austrian. Still not a day goes by without references to Nazi Germany in the British tabloid press, and try telling just a single jew that "it happened 60 years ago" makes the jewish genocide an issue not worth talking about for the sake of diplomacy, were the German government to deny everything. Not that they would ever do such a thing (talking about sane governments).
Plus, if Turkey were not involved, how come the Turkish people are protesting against the resolution everywhere?

My point is that the truth should never be suppressed for the sake of one's own advantage. It happens way to often, just look at China downplaying all that is going on in Burma at the moment for another recent example, or all the other involvements of the US with "insane nations" in the far east as long as it suits their purposes. I'm simply sick of a policy of lies and deception all over the world by the most powerful of countries.
