According to Winston Churchill's History of the English Speaking People, Jefferson was concerned that the French, or, worse, another foreign power, would have to large a foothold on that area of the continent, and he felt that the only way of avoiding that would be to purchase the land.
EDIT:
This in spite of the fact that Jefferson was pro-French. He was aware that the Spanish or the British could eventually get the land from the French, either by purchase, trade, or war.

The price was dirt cheap, less than a penny an acre. Remove a European power from our western border and allowing for expansion.Jefferson also feared that if the British and their allies could eventually beat Napoleon of France, Britain would take over the French territories in America and essentially have the US blocked from expanding its borders.

i think one of the purpose was also for expansion since the population in the east was increasing due to invitations to come to the new Land and offer for indentured servitude. Also, I'm not sure but, I think part of it was that they hated the French and wanted the land.

economically, it was a win win situation,france wanted to dump it because france was broke and we picked it up very cheap, we tripled the size of our country, we had a trading post river to move goods from the mountain areas
