AOL has this blurb about how "older" women should dress, and bunches checked in bragging about how they can wear all the latest fashions because they look so youthful.

Maybe they do, and maybe they can. I don't and I can't, but I don't want someone looking down her nose at me because I don't. I hate the way "society" tries to cram people into little molds. And people willingly allow themselves to be manipulated thusly.

I'm 56 and dress the way I want to. I can wear the "latest" but most are ugly. I'm not ready to dress or act like I'm 90, nor that I'm 20!

Be comfortable, look you're best and think positive. Nothing makes a woman more attractive then self-confidence.(I don't mean snooty)
Remember, God don't make no junk!

Well I pretty much agree with everybody here. I wear what I want ,when I want and haven't worn a skirt for about 13 years(worked in a fabric store) I like to be comfortable and as long as I'm clean I really don't concern myself anymore about what other people think. The only reason styles change is to make money for the fashion industry. Colour is another thing that irritates me . I wear colours that suit me and don't intend on being a clone because of the "in" colour this season.

Of course I would not be dressing as a teen does...I didn't when I was 25!..nor 35 etc.

However, I do seek clothes that flatter ME....and do not consciously look for 60' something styles, whatever that actually means.

Some years ago I picked up a whole lot of weight - now THAT did dictate style as not many clothes in plus sizes are that fashionable. However, I lost the weight two years ago and am now wearing a 10 at 5'7"

I wear tailored business suits[skirted and pants]; slacks; tees; sweaters; jeans; dockers; shorts [no, not short shorts]
and sometimes sexy evening wear.....My body dictates the style and my taste dictate the material, color etc. etc.

The only thing I've given up due to age is super high heels and two piece [bra and pants] swimsuits..but do wear tankini's...I have never been accused of dressing inappropriately.

I have female friends who are full figured; and I have friends who are thin and/or petite....folk vary !

My 88 yr old mother is slim and although she doesn't bare arms etc. she wear leggings, tunic tops etc. and the new 'ballet' flats...

The era of housedress wearing oldsters is OVER....same with lace covered collared dresses and sturdy tie up shoes - gone with my own grandmothers................

Even Queen Elizabeth has picked up a bit of style in her older age! ;-)

This is not a manipulation but a maintenance, being a woman you should maintain always, keep yourself always alive, well groomed, bright and thrill because you being a woman will be looked by others and particularly by men. You cant keep yourself away from the trends or the surrounds where you breath, this is a men dominated society where men rules, governs and drive the business so if you are a working woman you will have to be ornamented, well dressed, with cosmetics adornment. And this is initially a business requirement where to sell any products first you do sell your personality, your appearance, your impression, your looks and your presentation and after noticing all these affects the customer comes towards your products but first he/she looks at you then see what you are selling.

I never, in my wildest dreams, thought I would be answering a Q about fashion, but I'm going to.
I HAVE NEVER FOLLOWED FASHION!
I like pant suits (Mostly in black), jeans, tee shirts, sweatshirts, polo shirts, boots, sneakers, & ball caps & hiking hats.
I could give a rat's behind what fashion is in style, and heaven help the person(s) who try to change my look.
I am 62 going on 18, when my back allows it, and I have a 9 year old son. I am 5'5" & 125 lbs. My best asset is my legs & that's thanks to hiking.
I am comfortable with what I wear & who I am. I don't manipulate easy at all.

It's not just you....I find this type of response very similar to the response I get when I try to talk about the challenges of getting older...and about the not so pleasant little "inconveniences" of menopause.....No one else seems to notice any discomfort what so ever....Oh, minor little concerns but certainly never a problem....It must just be me...so, like you, I think "what's up" when every other "senior" feels just find and dandy and fits into a size 6 Gloria Vanderbilt jeans and a size xxs hoodie.....I wonder just who is being fully disclosing here. Perhaps purchasing and using a full length mirror would be a first step to painful honesty...

I am embarrassed for women of a certain age who want to dress like a teenager. It looks ridiculous. The fashion industry however caters to the young and thin.

It IS hard for older women to find fashionable clothing. There is a big opportunity for clothing designers to use their designing talents to design for older women. Many older women have more discretionary income to spend on clothing. They WANT to buy clothing. Is there a real designer out there that will use their talent to create fashionable clothing for mature women?

Today's hot designs look a lot alike. Before the season is done most end up on the markdown rack.

Dress how you want to.

I can't be crammed into a mold either. I'm a girl from the WV mt's, plain as dirt and what you see is what you get. Since I was old enough to pick out my own clothes, I've worn what I want-sometimes it's in style and sometimes it's not. I like something I'm comfy in and if I have to dress up a little, I still want to feel good in the clothes.

Get to know me and if someone doesn't like me, so be it. If they judge me on what I wear, that's their problem, not mine.

I don't really give a horse's patoody about these crazy styles these days. I'm talking about the drop waists on the pants, the flared legs on them too, the plaids are in (yuk!), the itsy bitsy sweaters that come under the boobs (real high young ones of course), the tiny jackets same way, layers and layers of layers and layers and all colors running together like kids fingerpainting.

Now don't get me wrong, young kids like my 16 yr old granddaughter and some 20 somethings will look adorable in such. But for me, well, I prefer soft solid colors, smooth simple lines in slacks and pullovers too. Soft fit Sweaters that actually fit my body not stretch over it like a bandaid. (Sears)
I layer my clothes in winter but I call them undershirts and camisoles. (JC Penney) I love a good pr of jeans from Macy's with a simple pullover, and my warm just above the knee length carcoat.
I especially like a soft neck scarf & gloves when it's cold and some good leather shoes if I dress up in slacks. I try to stay current but within my own colors and fabrics and simple lines. I can dress rather economically from different stores but still upgrade my appearance with a really good pair of leather shoes and a good leather purse.

I'm not trying to look younger; I'm not trying to be trendy. I'm satisfied with clothing that reflects my own tastes, makes me feel good and that I'm completely comfortable in.
I like to refer to my style as Old Classy Chic!

I'm not sure if I fit any mold.I wear nascar shirts and other sports wear.My kids tell me to dress my age.So I got an outfit that was more mature and they said I looked to old.So I guess I'm my own mold.I dress for comfort.I don't look like a model way to big for that.Anything over a 12 is to big for media.I like me and if no one else does it's their loss.Have a GREAT Day.
