Eisenhower, self declared "Peace" president, used federal tax dollars to create many of our highway systems.
Roosevelt, progressive founder of the National Park system.
Lincoln, used federal power to free oppressed people.

Also: I picked these three, because while not perfect, they are the three Republicans in history I most admire.

I sure would, I'm a traditional Conservative (Republican). Most Republicans aren't Republicans anymore. I can only name a few handful of Republicans. Ron Paul, George Taft (I think), Chuck Hagel, Tim Tancredo, etc.

If I had to pick a best (who could never be elected today), it would have to be Lincoln, who preserved the Union against almost impossible odds, in the process creating the conditions that would allow the nation to heal and grow after a bitter, horribly destructive Civil War. The effort killed him, figuratively and finally literally, but the Union survives because of him. Finally, I like him because he was as self-made a man and President as we have ever had, an excellent writer, and a very funny guy. In addition, there is no way that this ungainly man, born in poverty, self-educated, a homely country lawyer with a dreadful wife and a sqeaky speaking voice, could ever get elected in the age of TV and computers. This endears him to me all the more.

Eisenhower warned us to beware of the military industrial complex. Do you think that he would allow Blackwater and Halliburton to get away with what they have?
Actually, when Roosevelt ran for his second term he ran as a third party candidate, because he didn't agree with the conservative faction of the GOP back then. The present day Republicans would be calling Teddy Roosevelt the same names they are calling the Clintons.
Lincoln and Roosevelt have much more in common with Bill Clinton than Junior or any of the present GOP candidates.

the subject concerns of the 1800 and 1900's are thoroughly diverse then those of right this moment. One won't be able to say if Lincoln or Roosevelt could be Republicans or Democrats right this moment. lower back in those days there replaced into no outrageous deficit or debt, abortion wasn't a controversy, and gay marriage replaced into universally disliked. In those days, human beings argued over slavery, no rely if or no longer we'd desire to continually exterminate Indians etc. those days, no person debates approximately legalization of slavery.

Lincoln, I would definately vote for. He understood how wrong it is for the Supreme Court to try and solve issues that are basically political in nature. He said so in his first inaugural address.
Eisenhower? I doubt it. He appointed 5 Supreme Court Justices, and then at the end of his administration, acknowledged that 2 of those 5 appointments were the worst mistakes of his entire administration (he meant Chief Justice Warren and Justice Brennan).
Teddy Roosevelt, I could vote for. He made 3 appointments to the Supreme Court, one of whom was Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. who turned out to be one the Court's most outstanding Justices of all time .... even though Teddy himself didn't think so! Oh the irony!

Modern Republicans would rally behind NONE of these great men.
The GOP was first hijacked by the wealthy, then by those who would use a rather grotesque and downright mistaken vision of Jesus as their running mate.
Calling a Bush Republican the same Republican as those of Mr. Lincoln's day is like agreeing that aspirin and heroin are both called Drugs.
But you already knew that, hence your question.

Lincoln and T. Roosevelt would be too progressive/liberal for today's Republicans; Eisenhower might be chosen by the 'Pubs because of his past military service record; however, the 'Pubs would be unpleasantly surpirsed of his policies, once he would be in office.
Good observation.

I'd probably vote for any of them. At least they were tough enough to do what it takes to protect our country. And yes, I do mean by using force if necessary.

Definitely Eisenhower. Lincoln and Teddy were too divisive in their own times and way too radical for the Religious Right we have now (barf).
