According to the Mining Gazette, the Gipper is being exhumed for DNA testing in conjunction with an upcoming book on Gipp’s life written by historian Michael Bynum.

As mentioned by another person responding, ESPN filmed the exhuming and will air it in a program on Gipp as part of a series on the top 25 college athletes of all time.

According to Fox News (see http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,301051,00.html), there has been no comment about why the exhumation was made.

There may be questions about the cause of death that this descendant wants cleared up if possible. Maybe it is question of DNA to clear up a question of paternity. There are lots of reasons to exhume a body. A descendant of Houdini wanted his body exhumed to clear up just how he died.

No one knows why just yet, except it is at a family members request for DNA. Possiby an inheritance issue, or paternal issue. I'm sure with todays snoopy reporters we will know the reason in a few days.

When I first heard this I tried to imagine why and I could not come up with a good reason. It makes no sense at all. I would love to hear the reason why but I doubt that it will ever be made public.

Yeah, The Irish's Offense is that bad. They recruited a pneumonia ridden zombie from the 1920s to play QB.
