My dog recently came down with a dose of fleas. The situation is now pretty much under control, but at no point have my partner or I been bitten or found one on our own bodies. People tell me that dog and cat fleas do not live on humans but I know that people can have fleas so what sort of fleas can we carry?

Although there are many different species of fleas, the most common ones are:
Cat Fleas Ctenocephalides felis
Dog Fleas Ctenocephalides canis

Although one is called a dog flea and one is called a cat flea you won't be able to tell the difference without the aid of a microscope.

The most common flea found on dogs and cats is the cat flea.
It is a misconception that dogs only have dog fleas and cats only have cat fleas.
It has been reported that 95% of fleas found on dogs and cats are cat fleas

Dog fleas are rarely found in the United States.

Perhaps we should call Human fleas Pig fleas as they are most often found on pigs. People who work with pigs on a farm are much more likely to pick up human fleas. Human fleas are not common these days. In the usual domestic situation problems are usually caused by cat fleas.

Fleas do not usually live on humans although they certainly bite them!

By the way. After 30 years of keeping dogs and cats, the best method of ridding your home of fleas (unless you are completely infested and getting bitten every time you sit down), is to treat your animals with a flea killer such as Frontline (UK) available from your vet.
You put it on the neck of the animal, only about 2ml and it is absorbed. When the flea bites the animal it is poisoned.
Any fleas that then jump on the animal and bite it also die.

This treatment used with an insectcide on your home in bad cases will cure your infestation.
Pets pick up fleas from outside and these are also killed, keeping your home flea free!

Dog and cat fleas don't live on humans, but they will bite them. Well, dog fleas anyway - apparently cat fleas stick to cats, but unless you have both cats and dogs, who can tell the difference.

There is a species of Human flea which can live on humans without any animals being present. Yuck. I don't imagine the houses of people with human flea infestations are very sanitary.

Take it from one who knows--- while fleas don't "live" on humans like they do cats and dogs, they do definitely hop onto and bite humans. My cat came home from the vet with fleas a few years back, and now we have a battle every year with all three cats (all of which are indoors all the time), and we have even had our house exterminated for them and still have them. Weird, I know. And if you have not yet been bitten, thank the Lord.

If you have fleas in your house they will usually get on your feet or ankle area and bite you. They're just like a mosquito in that you, most of the time wont feel them bite you. Basically if your dog had fleas and was in the house, your house has fleas. Walk around and look down at your feet every once in awhile and see if you see a little black spec. If you try to grad them most of the time they will jump off of you. If you're successful in catching one, squeezing it between your fingers usually wont kill it. Also, flee eggs can last up to a year in your carpet or furniture without hatching and can then hatch when they feel the vibrations of a "host" close enough for them to jump on it. Best thing to do, go to the store and get some fogers and set them off....
Good Luck.

A flea is a flea is a flea. It's a good thing you all didn't get them. Just to make sure, you can do a thorough cleaning of bed linens, pillows, blankets, furniture covers, and clean the carpets. There may be a new batch just waiting to hatch. They are nasty little blighters.

Fleas do not live on humans. When someone says they have fleas the probably mean in their carpeting and furniture.
