No, you wouldn't get a normal cast. The doctor/hospital would give you a soft, removable splint.
you would have wounds from the surgery that need to heal, and eventually stitches/staples ...and pins that would need to come out. There isn't a doctor in America that would put a permanent hard cast over that. (without getting sued, that is)
The potential for infection is enormous!!!!

If the doctor says it needs opening to stop the swelling then she will have to hae it changed, this means keepin her arm very still for the time the cast is open, otherwise it can be really bad for her arm and it might have to be reset (i had my cast opened when i had a broken arm and i was told not to move it at, i wasnt even alowed to stand up whist it was opened untill they put the new one on. It will be a pain to get her arm to get re-cast when you get to the other side, but i would do it if i were you, it's not going to be painful , just annoying and time consumming and expensive for you! i would definatly take her though, you don't want her to miss out! good luck !

yes you still need a cast. Pined bones take a long time to heal.

usually yes, the arm still needs to be immobilized to allow the tissues to heal, all the pins do is hold the tissue in place, they don't immobilize the arm.
