She can apply for Section 8 or Public Housing usually also called HUD find it in the front of the phone book where she lives she can apply for herself and say that she is leaving her husband she only has to attach her paystubs the rent is usually only 30% of her gross income. Then after she leaves then go to the court house and file for divorce which is usually $250.00 $30 up front to talk to the person at the court house that gives u the paperwork for divorce and tells u how to do it and she wouldn't have to have the filing fee until 3 months or 90 days depending on how many days in her state that it takes to divorce. If she needs legal help usually there is free legal help that she can receive because of her income call the local college and ask for the womens resource room they should be able to give her the name of who to call and they will also help her with clothes, appliances possibly and even help her get into school if she wants to she should be able to get a full ride financial aid even if she couldn't get the financial aid until the divorce was finale she might want to stay with her husb until after the first of the year to get into housing it will take about 3 months anyway just so when she files her taxes she can file by her self next year not this yr coming up she will have to file married filing separately she can't even do that because u have to be separated for 6 months. Hope this helps. If her husband is hurting her in any way even mentally abusing her she can get help from the local abuse hotline usually theres ones for women. If her life is in danger they can help her secretly live at a safe place and help her get on her feet. The public housing or section8 will work with her on her deposit.

So nice to see someone trying to milk the welfare system at the expense of tax payers! She can go get a FULL time job and rent a cheap apartment if that's all she can afford. I don't want my tax dollars supporting someone who only wants to work part time!

It sounds like she is NOT divorced because you said, "she is unhappy in her marriage and wants to leave her husband", so why are you saying she's not legally married? I'm glad she was denied welfare. Welfare should be for the people who are REALLY in need, not for people who want money so they can get out of a boring marriage.

The happy outcome of her predicament need not be funded by the good paying taxpayers of Maine , I'm not sure if common law marriage is acknowledged in the state of Maine but if it is she needs to see an attorney and get what is legally hers and move on , the laws are often better equipped to help with married couples not those who choose to play house...

Why would they file jointly if they are not married? You even refer to him as her husband. So if she's married, she needs to get a divorce. If they have been together for years, they might have a common law marriage, which is a legal marriage. Either way, she should see a lawyer.

If she was legally married in her country before they immigrated to the US and live in Maine she should still be considered legally married. So first to get public assistance she would have to file for a divorce.

She filed jointly therefore she is legally married. If not then by filing jointly she defrauded the Government and could wind up in prison. So quite obviously she isn't going to get state aid.

She IS legally married......tell her to ask her husband for support instead of me, the American taxpayer supporting her lazy @ss......or if she doesn't want his money, she can go get a job!!!!!
And if you feel so sorry for her....why don't YOU support her, instead of us?
