He'll probably have a better chance at getting the Libertarian nomination, but could impact the discussion more running as a Republican.

id say because there has always been a libertarian part of the republican party , just like there has always been a libertarian part of the Democratic party. why do you think republican or Democrat label covers all parts of the spectrum

Ron Paul was and is a republican nominated Representative not a libertarian Representative

he did leave the party to run as a libertarian candidate but was and is a republican.

People never vote for the 3rd Party candidates.
Many people are not familiar with Libertarians and are more likely to vote for a Republican. His stances certain specific issues might also lean more to the Republican side.

Because he is NO libertarian! Ron Paul is strongly anti-choice: actual libertarians don't think "reproductive rights" are any business of the government!

Because if he ran under Libertarian, the dumb American voters would not know what his positions are and not vote for him. This way, he has a shot at winning.

He had a better shot of winning as a major party candidate, though he doesn't really have a chance of that.

Liberitarian is a repuke who still wants to get laid and get high. None of these makes them suitable for the office but definitely is a better alternative to a "pure" no-child's-behind-left "conservative. Simply because it's hard to imagine a worse alternative...

Probably because 3rd party candidates never get invited to debates and don't get much publicity.
