Most of us don't remember our first years of life... Perhaps because we thought ourselves as being linked with another entity..... a nurturing mother. Do we realize that we exist on our own at age 3, 4, 5? And is it a sudden awareness or a gradual understanding ?

Earlier than that.

Sometime in a babies 2nd year of life--after they turn 1--they become aware that they are separate beings from their parents.

Your first memories of childhood have little to do with when you first became self-aware.

I have memories going back to pre-3. Most of my friends say thier first memories are from around 4. I really think this has more to do with the individual than with self-awareness.

Developmentally, it's at about age 3. It's not sudden because it's a natual progression (hence why it's called development).

Apparently it starts at age three... but many people remember things from way before three. I'm one of those people.
