I have been registered with myspace for a year now but don’t have a profile page. The reason is because My space has gotten a lot of bad press and I have heard that employers and universities are looking at my myspace pages from applicants. Tell me is it really a bad idea to have a myspace page

just set your page to private, then nobody but your friends can see it.

If you keep your page private so only friends can look at it, you're probably ok - just make sure you don't have anything that you wouldn't want your mother, future employer, etc. looking at.

A lot of employers are starting to look at Myspace and others like it (Facebook, etc.) to get an idea of who it is they're dealing with when hiring. I heard a story this morning of a teacher who is on paid administrative leave because of a picture that was taken at a bachelor party on her myspace.

Also - be aware of the kinds of things on your friends' sites - even if you don't have anything bad, make sure they don't have anything bad either or a potential employer may look at that and determine that if your friends have certain content on their sites, that you're probably the same and may not hire you. Also be careful about what you send in bulletins and posts, and comments that you post on other users' pages.

It is not a bad idea to have a myspace page. They can be great for passing information to other people. It should tell you (and everyone) that the content of the page is important. Present a true picture of yourself. Project the image that you want others to see. It will be looked upon badly if you project yourself as gothe or have a lot of profanity and sexuality on your myspace. It may be cool around kids but it may not be the image you want everyone to have of you.

Sure Don't put any PERSONAL info on it.

Thats where people Screw up. They start putting personal Info such as Their Name, Address, BIrthCirtificate Copies, Blood Type, and SO on (/end Sarcasm), .....And wonder when something Bad or strange happens.

It's the Internet Folks, Stop Playing Real Life, Keep Sensitive Personal and Identifying Information OFF the NET!

You can Have a Completely Fun, and Fulfilling Experience on Social Networking Sites Like MySpace, if you follow that Basic Mentality, It's Not Real Life, Keep The Personal Info Off :)

Hope that Helps.

It depends on the person. I think its bad for anyone to put all of their personal business over the internet whether through myspace or another website.

Myspace works with you on keeping your information private (I believe). You can keep your page private so only your friends can see your page, you can require people to know either your last name or email address to ask to become your friends and other ways to hide your identity.

But if you really want to try it but are a bit skeptical you could always make a page with a fake information =] just for fun.

I have a MySpace page, and I've never had any problems. What you can do, if you want one, is limit who can see your page. I would also not put anything that would be offensive or make you look bad on your page just in case someone of authority in your life would happen to "stumble across it."

Myspace is a great way to keep in touch with friends and family, you can however set it to private to keep other people from viewing it. You also don't have to tell anyone that you have a myspace unless you want them to know and you don't even have to use your last name on myspace so it would be impossible for some one to know unless you want them to.

Well, if you are applying for a job or trying to get into a university you could absolutely have a myspace page.....just don't be an idiot and put incriminating stuff about yourself on there.

I think that it is. My son had a My Space page and people got on his page a left some pretty negative stuff.
Also, I watched him get on one day and as soon as he logged on a "tracker" was placed on my computer. If I hadn't ran and anti-virus immediately then I could have lost my computer not to mention the info people can get and use against you.
I am disabled and watch a lot of TV. Judge shows mostly and I have seen several cases that MY SPACE was used against that person.
If you create one then I suggest you have a hack proof computer and I Hope that everyone you know is your friend and that you have no enemies. {People will post comments about YOUR my space page on their MY SPACE page and there is no way you can change it. My sons page was desecrated. Good luck on on your decision.

No.
However, you do need to be careful of what personal information you put of there.

Better still, there is a way to make your profile only viewable to your friends--private to everyone else.
On your Myspace Home screen, click "Account Settings", then the tab that says "Privacy", and click the box that says [Only Viewable By:] "My Friends Only".

Not at all! Just be careful who you accept as friends, what information you give about yourself, and what pictures you put up. You don't want your page to be full of half naked pictures and you doing keg stands, unless that's what you're into. If you're worried about a future employer looking at your page make your page and your pictures private so that only your friends can view them.
