I keep hearing and seeing people say that, but they never say "the women degrade themselves." It is ridiculous to see T&A all the time in Rap videos, but these Rappers aren't forcing these women to do it. If you believe that it degrades women please explain. I would love to understand.

I also feel that Rappers aren't talking about every female when they uses words like b**ch, h*e and such. The question is not about Rappers like Talib and Mos Def, but the typical Rap that you see on BET.

I don't think rap music degrades women I think its bringing light to some realities. For instance before certain rap songs and artists people knew very little about the allure of strip clubs. Strip clubs and strippers didn't come into existence AFTER rap music these artists are choosing to shed light on the industry and many interpret it as degrading... Another reality is that there are different type of women in the world some who can relate to what the rappers are rapping about because they are there, been there, and have done that... And will continue to do it because its the lifestyle they choose. If we see those women as a representation of all women then it can be damaging to our image in some respects but the truth is they don't represent all women.
The reality is that rap is an art form that shed light on many different lifestyles and some people don't like that. Some people would prefer to sweep it under the carpet but that goes against the essence of art. Art is revealing raw and often hurtful. The key is to teach out children that this is a reality but you have choices in life and that's the choice they (certain women) made.

I think rap music does degrade women. Only a few rappers are trying to change that. Common did a song with will I am to I have a dream. I heard KRS is pretty good too. i was watching this show about hip hop and Nelly said they only rap about what people want to hear. It is not just hip hop. It is people's mentality that has to change. People's sense of morality has dropped a lot over the last century. How do you expect for the music to change? For example, smack that by akon feat. eminem.

Rap music can be very degrading to women because many people get their images of women from the videos and the language. That's why we have to do more than just "turn it off" if we don't like it because those who do choose to watch it are forming an opinion of those group of women. Not only that, but many young men who don't have a mom and dad married to each other and showing good examples of how to treat women, are getting their instructions from these videos and music lyrics.

On the other hand, young women have to be taught to have more respect for their selves. Girls like to imitate what they think will get guys attention and if pretty young women are half naked shaking their boodies then what will the young ones do? Believe me, I know because I have sons and daughters and turning off the TV works while they are real young, but as they get older and they get more freedom, they still emulate the lyrics and images without a strong teaching base.

Not all rap music is degrading but actually pretty good music when it's about real life issues - instead of sex, cars, profanity and bling.

I think I see where you're coming from here. Personally, I don't like Rap music, but I have watched plenty of Rap videos and the girls dancing around, wiggling their booty, they don't seem to mind! I don't believe that Rap music degrades women. I think that Rap music is a part of a culture that many people rush to judgement on when they really don't understand it at all. Hope that made some sense.

Its the never ending cycle....chicks get paid to be in the video....if they disagree with what they are doing or wearing then like any job they will be replaced by someone who will do what they are told...rappers put t&a in the vids to get spins and be memorable because sex sells always has and always will....then they sell a bunch of copies and make a new album and the cycle starts again...

and it does degrade them but again it is a never ending cycle....and it isnt the artists fault....its the label head bc he has final say on everything....

and saying b itch and hoe isnt degrading because there are b itches and hoes that are both men and women....and specifically about women it just means that they have been raised by the images they see....if they see t&a and hoes then they can easier start acting like that....so its like the never ending cycle again...

I dunno if it will ever end unless the society changes its moral grounds and starts really trying to make a change...

wher u been :)....long time no see...

well, to be honest, not all rap songs are degrading women but the songs that do, if a woman feels that it does degrade her, then why listen to it in the first place? and also, like someone said that it is entertainment for the males... well lets put it this way, lets say you have a doughter, you'd do anything to protect her and to keep her safe right? well lets say she's the chick on the music video or whatever... it wouldn't be the same then would it? but yes and no, rap songs don't always degrade women but there are some that do...

In my opinion, I really don't think rappers use those words offensive to target women. The whole reason they say it is to sound cool and to offend other rappers. For example, Young Buck uses the word b*** to offend Lil Wayne. In few music videos Young Buck says the b word behind the models. It may seem he might be saying those words to them but he isn't same goes for Make It Rain. Even if they say it there aren't saying seriously. Models in music videos are paid high money to act it out not actually do it.

I agree with you. I am a woman and I love rap music, but I am not a promiscuous person. I have been with the same man and we are married, but that doesn't mean I have to sleep with every guy out there to love rap.

You do what you do and every person has to live with their decisions or regrets. Rap music does not degrade women- women degrade themselves by opening up their own legs to anyone.

I think that it is a little of both. I think that rappers are degrading women and that women are letting them so that they can get paid, be on t.v, or whatever else is in their agenda. It's like women who sleep with sports stars for the sole purpose of having their babies to get paid for the rest of their lives. They don't want a baby, they just want the money. These women don't want the shame that may come with shaking your butt on TV where your grandmother can see it they want the notoriety and money of being famous.

Somehow I think it depends because in rap there's always the issue of context...for example like Snoop Singing in the song F**k You, it was meant to degrade because he's dissing about a girl who sleeps with other guy while she herself has a husband....

I mean, rap is about expression, and expression involves all kinds of context and that includes both empowerment or degrading...If you're asking in quantity or in overall sense then...i guess it would be prejudice to label rap music in such a way....because its too big of a genre to be labeled as such...
