Ok. So im planning on buying an xbox 360 but i know nothing about it. I want to set up xbox live and im gonna get an ethernet cable but i cant find where the dsl/cable modem is in my house. All i know is that the chord from my computer goes into the wall. Can anyone tell me where my modem might be or what it might look like. And if you have an internet thats connected to your phone do you still have modem?

Does the cable going from your computer into the wall look like this:

or like this:

If it's the former, you'll want to get an external modem (you currently have one in your computer) and hook up your computer and xbox to that via ethernet cables
(if possible, some modems only have one ethernet port. In that case, you need a modem and a switch. The switch would connect everything together with ethernet cables).

If it's the latter, just get a switch and plug your computer and xbox into that, then plug the switch into the wall.

First off, you need to know if you do indeed have DSL or Cable Internet. Is the cable from your computer a phone line? If so, you are using Dial-Up and it wouldn't really be good to try and play XBox Live! on a Dial-Up connection (too slow).

If you do have DSL or Cable, the modem is usually where the line comes into your house at.

If your connected by a wall socket by rj45, easies way is to get a Hub, that will give you more ports to share with anything else you want to connect. It might be connected by the phone
you might have like VoIP,
