what i did was get a new user account and give it only to friends. you cannot control it anymore, since they got your user id already they can just send you messages whenever they want.

What type of messages? Messenger type or "system" messages? If it's messenger messages, just make sure which ever messenger you are using (MSN, YAHOO, AOL, etc...) is not setup to automatically connect whenever the computer is turned on or you can set it to show as "offline" so people don't know you're "online" - Broadband connections are always up so you don't need to have a browser running for the messenger to connect. If it "system" messages - and I am using the quotes because they are probably not true system messages - then you need to run a virus and spyware scan on your PC. I tend to use www.antivirus.com (Trend-Micro) for online scanning and they are pretty good at finding viruses and spyware (and it's free) although it can take a while for the scan to run. The product is called "House Call".

They pop up on your screen as simple text and the only button is OK? If so, you need to disable your Messaging service. Right click My Computer and then click Manage. Expand Services and Applications and then click Services. Scroll down until you see "Messenging"...double click it and click the Stop button. Also, set the Startup Type to Disabled. That will stop those spam messages.

Click on your nickname when signed in and go into Options. Make sure the settings that let you see offline messages when you sign in are turned on.
