I would probably stick to the morning cereal feedings for a few days to make sure it doesn't upset his stomach/make him gassy before you add it to his night time routine. Once you know his body tolerates it, I'm sure it would be fine to give him a little in the morning and a little at night in addition to his bottles. When you take him for his 6 mo well-check, you could just ask the pediatrician how much cereal/day is recommended for his age. Before long he'll be into all the good stuff- fruits & veggies...get ready for the fun!

I say start once a day at first. For like a week or so. If he is seems hungrier, slowly work him up to more than once a day. My son is 7 months old, and he started cereal at 4 months old. He is just now getting into eating solids 3 times a day.
The biggest thing to watch out for is constipation, well, and allergies. Try sticking with the same flavor for at least 4 days to make sure he's not allergic before switching to another flavor. Also, wait a good week or so to see if there is any changes in his bowels. He might get constipated. After every change in flavor watch for that too.

I was one of those moms who did everything "wrong". Gave my kids rice cereal in their bottles with formula at 2 months, they slept like angels, gave them eggs and beans and all that other mushy people food. Fortunately, they are not overweight, have no allergies to speak of, and are not picky eaters (well, the older child still won't eat avocado lol). If you son is doing well on the cereal, I don't see why you can't feed it to him when you want to. I would be careful with watching his bowel movements though, and continue giving him formula as well. My kids loved to have fruit mixed with the cereal, but I made sure they ate veggies before introducing them to fruits. Bottom line is, if you feel your child is ready, and you are positive that he is not reacting badly to it, then do what is comfortable for you. My Pediatrician was appalled that I fed my kids this way, but shut up when I asked him if he could live on just milk for a few months lol.

As you can see, people have a lot of differences in opinion...
What I did with my kids was one time a day for a while, then working their way up to more. Remember that most nutrition comes from formula/breastmilk for the first year, so right now he's just playing around with it. Just be sure not to feed so much cereal (twice a day wouldn't be too much) that he's not getting enough milk.
I am so glad he's doing so well!

You should give the baby some type of solids with every meal. Then you follow that with a bottle of formula. Three times a day, and a small extra bottle right before bed if needed. You want his tummy full so he'll sleep through the night and not wake you.

as with any new food, feed it for 4 days in a row before trying something else. there should be no problem with feeding it twice a day, i'm glad he did so well with it! next you may want to try oatmeal cereal. then start on the veggies (gerber are fine, but taste VERY bland, i recommend pureeing your own!)
http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com has great information, what ages to introduce which foods, recipes for making your own baby food (even baby cereal!), etc.
enjoy!

If rice cereal agrees with your son, giving it to him in the morning and at night won't hurt a thing, in fact it will help him sleep better at night.

At this age, your child is not going to overeat in front of the TV and become obese. If he is hungry, by all means, feed him until he is full. Babies this young are not "emotional overeaters" or eating because they are bored, which tends to cause obesity. They are just hungry!!! He will be much, much happier if you feed him when he's hungry and in turn, so will you! Good luck!
