Why are conservative "Christians" so obnoxius and feel so moraly superior to others. They are often intolerant and selfish. Their views and actions often seem opposite of the benevolence that Jesus actually stood for. I'd be happy if we put all religous zealots (Christian, Jewish, Hindi, Moslem, etc.) on Antartica and let them battle it out as to who was "better", and let the rest of us live in peace.

In the past, those communities of faithful believers that out worked, out fought and out numbered competitors won in the game of survival and sacrifice. That means those ideological traditions that best motivated communities of faithful believers to out work, out fight, and out number competitors survived and those that did not were sacrificed. This explains the success of books like the Bible. Books like the Bible survive in part because books like the Bible motivate communities of faithful believers to out work, out fight and out number competition.

Conservative Christians would argue that success is proof that books like the Bible contain words expressing the will of God. Here is a problem with that line of reasoning. There are other books besides the Bible that have been successful in motivating communities of faithful believers to out work, out fight and out number their competition: the holy Koran being a notable example. I believe both books are products of an on going evolution within the global culture of ideological traditions where in those ideological traditions that best motivate communities of faithful believers to out work, out fight, and out number competitors survive and those ideological traditions that do not perish. I believe the much talked about clash of cultures between Islam and Christianity reflects an on going conflict to determine whose holy book best expresses the will of God as well as a fight between motivated communities of faithful believers over increasingly scarce natural resources of our body consuming biosphere of limited dimensions. I believe the much talked about race in racism is a race towards Armageddon run by communities of faithful believers motivated by conservative ideological traditions to out work, out fight and out number competition.

Some conservative ideological authorities offer the many education, entertainment and leadership based on aggressive ideological traditions that are skewed towards the interests of racist, heterofascist, warmongers by a mercenary plutocratic predatory few who profit from the sale and manufacture of the products and services of a beast of a military industrial complex. Although conservative ideological authorities do their best to make it look good, it is bad entertainment, education and leadership that leads to low esteem of self and world. A model of self divided by a spiritual conflict between good and evil leads to low self esteem and a model of world divided by a spiritual conflict between good and evil leads to low world esteem. This low esteem of self and world leads some members of communities of faithful believers to have a fear of the sexual nature of self and a fear that self is being influenced at every moment by an evil one cast down to and ruling over Earth. Fear of an unpleasant afterlife motivates some members of communities of faithful believers to follow bad leadership offered by those ideological authorities that would demand faith, unquestioning loyalty and obedience of the many on behalf of a mercenary plutocratic predatory few who seek to perpetrate a global shakedown of epic proportions some call a war on terror; and concentrate the wealth of the global culture into their own hands.

Not all Christians are like this but there are quite a few.
I am not really bothered by them. I just ignore them.

The only time they piss me off is when they force their morality into our laws and politics. I tend to vote Republican and many years ago that was the party I overwhelmingly voted for... but that was before the Religious Right had a vice grip on the GOP, Then the Republican party put more of a focus on abortion and gay marriage and school prayer than fiscal conservatism. I wish these Christian Republicans would just go away so we can get back to economics but I don't see that happening any time soon.

I don't get that at all.
I do see a lot of liberals making claims how they care about the poor.
It took a liberal to publish the opposite to be true.
So selfish they are not because they do give more of their own time and money to help the poor than do liberals. Above all else they don't ask for the fan fare liberal demand.
Intolerant gee lets see they put minorities in positions of power.
They never made a big deal about Mary Cheney but liberal did.

Jesus would have a tough time with people who ingore the Law and that would be all of us.

I happen to think conservative Christians don't consider themselves moral superiority.
I think you are just jealous because they work on a moral code to improve themselves while you want to destory all they work for.

They are indeed legends in their own minds. They have a special talent for being self-righteous about morality and then ignoring members of their own party that end up being exposed as hypocrites. I just think of it as amusement. Who can take that sort of egotistical self-worship seriously but them? EDIT: Not Rep or Dem: To them being politically conservative and socially conservative are part and parcel of the same thing. That's half the problem with their moralizing. They get government and their church mixed up on a regular basis.

The very religious non-Christians, as Joycelyn Elders called them, do make other Christians look bad. And religious zealotry and intolerance is a cause of much of the misery in the world. I wonder if their focus on how Jesus died rather than how he lived warps their thinking. Many religious intolerants focus on the parts of the Bible that suit them and ignore the rest of it.

BTW, vinsa, "Moslem" is an acceptable, if archaic, spelling for one who practices Islam

Because they feel they are right and you are wrong. If it serves there own "morality of the day" (aka whatever makes them money) then it is God's word. The rest of us have unfortunately had to suffer through about a decade of this garbage, and can't wait for the country to wake up and smell the coffee. As for the other religions, there are nutjobs everywhere, however, the majority of them seem to belong to the conservative christian right.

True as it is that zealots of all kinds have a "holier than thow" attitude, it is a problem of elitism, not religion.

Any group or person able to distinguish themselves from others is subject to the temptation to consider themselves better for that reason. This leads to superiority complex.

While there are quite a few Christians who act anything but Christian, there are Christians who act accordingly and are not judgmental and would be the first to help their neighbor.

And I will be the first to admit that I forget all about the good Christians out there, but that's because they don't want recognition for their work, they just want to good things for the sake of doing them.

Any group of people would be considered superior. I've been around lots of people from different cultures and religions and they all have that smug attitude. I wouldn't be surprised if a bunch of atheist would not have it either.

It is called pride, nothing wrong with it. It only is a problem when your pride turns into zealousness and then into hatred.

You think that the religious are intolerant and selfish - sweety, look at your question . . . "I'd be happy if we put all religious zealots (Christian, Jewish, Hindi, Moslem, etc.) on Antartica and let them battle it out as to who was "better", and let the rest of us live in peace."

Now, that's more intolerant (by the way, it's Muslim, and Antarctica) and selfish than any religious person I have ever met!

It is the "My god is better than your god syndrome (or no god)"

A perfect example of this is the "morally superior" christian that beat up the kid earlier this week for not believing in god.

The kid snapped, came back and shot up the school.
