i get x = 1/3 is that correct or is it negative

2007-10-11 06:38:57 · 7 answers · asked by shawna 2 in Science & Mathematics Mathematics

This is what Im doing,
-x + 6 = -4x + 5
add 4x to both sides and get,
-3x +6 = 5
subtract 6 from both sides and get
-3x = -1
then divide both sides by -3 and get 1/3 because a negative divided by a negative is positive. So why is the answer negative? Am I supposed to start from the other side?

-x+6=-4x+5 Add 4x to both sides
3x+6=5 subtract 6 from both sides
3x= -1 divide by 3 on both sides
it would be x= -1/3. HOpe this helps.

-x + 6 = -4x + 5
-x +4x = -6 + 5
-3x = -1
x = -1/-3 ( since " - " sign is applicable to both x and the digit 3 thus when u divide the whole expression by -3 the answer will be as follows)

x = -1/3
