They help, but they are not 100% protective. They protect you 95% of the time if used correctly, but only 75% if you don't. I recommend getting one with spermicide, it helps kill them. To be extra safe, I would also use birth control pills. Remember, condoms don't protect from STD's, so you have to be careful.

They'll only fail during the time you are fertile, meaning, they can fail when you aren't fertile (don't have a viable egg around), and other than for STDs, the pregnancy risk is zero! You don't have a viable egg and your body kills sperm during those your infertile times. Strangely enough, you are fertile only for about 6 days when you ovulate (release the egg), and THIS is when you can get pregnant if a condom breaks/ is used incorrectly (which always makes me think, is someone putting it on their arm or toes or something? How difficult is a condom to use?!?!). You can tell you are fertile because you'll have an eggwhitey (stretchy clear/white/yellow) discharge about 10-17 days after your period begins.
If you are worried or you want more information (which is always good!!), check out the book, Taking Charge of Your Fertility. It gives you the low-down of when you are fertile, and the signs of it, and a lot more detail that I just gave you. It's an easy read, and just as far as knowing about my reproductive health, it was great! You can prevent pregnancy pretty well by following the advice in the book!
I just avoid having sex around when I ovulate, with or without a condom. The rest of the time, other than those 6-7 days, you can have unprotected sex and not get pregnant because no egg, hostile environment to sperm (as I mentioned above). Saying that, it probably isn't a good idea to have unprotected sex unless you are in a monogamous relationship or married :). Good luck!

Condoms have a good reputation for preventing pregnancy but accidents can happen.. broken condom, faulty condom etc.
For a protection rate of 99.9% use the pill to. Although keep in mind that that accidents can happen if the pill is not used properly (there is no 100% complete protection, except not doing it)
If you are that scared about it then please wait until you are married. Don't let your bf force you to do something you are not ready for

Condoms break, pills fail. I know 2 girls who got preg on the pill. If you're scared, use both, if you're REALLY scared, abstain. You can also take a morning after pill if you have a condom break.

condoms are a good way not to get pregnant and prevent stds but they are NOT 100% effective if you and your bf are going to start having sex i suggest you get birth control you can go to ur doctor or if you do not want ur parents to find out you can go to your local health clinic or a planned parenthood and they will not find out i would also continue to use condoms as well as birth control good luck!

NOTHING is 100% effective against pregnancy except for abstinence.
Every time you have sex you risk the chance of pregnancy.
Condoms are not 100% effective.
Neither are pills, patches, shots, rings, etc.

Yes 100% effective, against pregnancy that is. As long as the condom does not brake you're good to go. Just keep in mind this does not protect against all Sexualy transmitted disease
like HPV which is transmitted thru bodily liquids and skin contact
