I currently am on an 'up to 8Mb' tariff and have run tests on my own line that show my current download speed is only 1.63Mbps. Is there any way I can check to see what the actual speeds are for the area in which I live? I ask as some people have told me they are getting upwards of 6Mbps in the same area as me.

Check it out at www.speedtest.net

The is it's THAT FAR below your rated (note it will probably say "up to 8mb" ) contact your internet provider and complain. If you pay for "up to 8mb" and get under 6, regularly, I'd sure complain

If you go to dslreports.com and test your connection there. It should also tell you what the average speed for your area is currently.
