George Washington during the convention sat silent for its four months, even when they went into the Committee of the Whole and he cam down from the chair. He had little direct involvement with the debates of the other delegates nor did he intercede with any arguments between any individuals or any groups. He voted with the Virginians; before the Convention met he had made it clear that his sympathies lay with a national government. Yet only on the last day, September seventeenth, did Washington rise to take part in the debates. Washington showed himself firm, courteous, inflexible. When he approved a measure, delegates reported that his face showed it. Yet it was hard to tell what the General was thinking and impossible to inquire. In his silence lay his strength. His presence kept the Federal Convention together, kept it going.

The preceding is mostly taken from the book “Miracle at Philadelphia” by Catherine Drinker Bowen as she gleaned the facts from Madison’s notes of the Convention and the letters that delegates wrote in the ensuing years concerning the Convention.

Wahington had a presence that invoked respect. He was honest and never had a polical agenda beyond serving to free his country. Quite often he was facilitation (or moderation) during debates between federalist and democrat-republicans, again because he was in some ways inert to the political spectrum.
