It depicts a hypothetical scene during the English Civil War between the Parliamentarians and Royalists.

In the scene, the young son of a Royalist is being questioned by Parliamentarians as to the whereabouts of his father. It sets a forced conflict in the young boy between telling the truth to authority figures, and lying to them to protect his father.

All of the figures are rendered sympathetically, and the point seems to emphasize the way that a war of neighbor against neighbor can force such situations to arise - with everybody believing honestly that they are in the right.
