I live on a cul de sac with 2 houses on one side and 2 on the other. My house is the last on the left side, and I can see anyone that comes up the lane, walking or driving. Still, since I am small, and live alone I check, and if I don't want to see the person or if they didn't call first and it's a bad time, I pretend not to be home. Even though I'm a bit of a loner, I love company, but have manners and call first.

In my old neighborhood in the ghetto, I would never open the door, just crack the window and say "I'm not interested". Who wants to be home invaded? I eventually put a sign on my door that said:
NO SOLICITATIONS
NO GRASSCUTTING
NO BIBLEPUMPERS
You would be amazed at how many idiots cannot read. This guy came up to my house, I cracked the window and said "not interested" and when he got down to the sidewalk, I opened the door up and told him to not ever again step foot on my property and I asked him if he could read ... he stated he wasn't selling anything (he was a bible pumper).
My new neighborhood, high tax heaven, is very nice, I always look out the peep hole to see who it is. And I open the door and state I'm not interested in a kind, gentle voice. Usually its just cute girls trying to sell things for school.

i've got a window right next to the door, so can look if I want. I also have 3 good sized dogs on the inside of the door, so no I don't usually look, I open the door.

I check to see who it is. Because you never now who the hell it will be if you just open the door.

I look first. If it is someone I do not want to see, I ignore it. I hate door to door sales people and pop-in visitors.
