First, download and run CPU-Z ( http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php )

Once you've run the program, in the CPU tab you will see something named "Package". This should tell you generally what kind of CPU it will support.

Next, go to the Mainboard tab and note the manufacturer of your motherboard and the model number. Go to the website of the manufacturer and look up the motherboard. It should list exactly what CPUs are supported.

It depends on what type motherboard it is. It could either be a "Slot 1" or "Slot A." Slot 1 is for Pentium and Slot A is for AMD Athlon processors.
