Well sweetie, here is one example. Years ago there were no super highways in New York State. About the middle 1950's or so they decided to build the NYS Thruway from NYC to Buffalo....and said they would charge tolls 'until they got it paid for'. Famous last words........that Thruway has been paid off for many years, and still charge tolls, and in fact, seem to now be agitating to raise the tolls. When questioned, tney reply they need the money for 'repairs and upkeep' . The politicians always, always have an answer, and somehow or other it always seems to gouge us, the citizen who pays for this stuff. Unfair???

To pay for the road construction and maintenance. Also, once the communities get accustom to the income from the toll road they never take the tolls down. Most roads are paid for in a short amount of time. The DOT is supposed to use the toll money to fund all road projects, not just the road covered by the toll, at least in NH.

Keep in mind that in the east they use salt on the roads in the winter which leads to significant maintenance problems.

There are toll roads in the west. I470 around Denver is a toll road, probably the most expensive per mile toll road I've been on. They hit you for $2 approximately every 10 miles.

In New Hampshire you can drive the whole length of I95 (all 17 miles) for a $1.

The tolls on I90 (Massachusetts Turnpike) in MA are supposed to be footing the bill for the Big Dig project in downtown Boston. Largest public works fiasco in US history.
