A place to be proud of.
A nation that stood up to tyranny on many occasions.
A country that gave much to the rest of the world both good and bad.
An island that for its size incredibly controlled almost a third of the globe at one point.
A place of mixtures from the historical to the modern.
Somewhere that's no longer sure of itself.
Somewhere I call home.

First Answer: Shakespeare; poetry, 1000 years of culture; the Lake District; courtesy

Despite their centuries as an empire, which was a lot more evil than most people realize, as all empires are, the British/English have done a better job of preserving their historic buildings, the record of their way of life, and of setting up museums than has anyone else. Their films ad TV shows such as "To the Manor Born", Six Wives of Henry VII" and "I,Claudius"are often far more literate and realistic than USers efforts are; they fought bravely and professionally in WWII, trying to teach us to stop being dimwitted cowboys; and their films have become noted for setting as well as costumes, music and classical actors of quality--when they are employed.
This is one of the best countries to visit in the world; and the people I found to be helpful, kind and friendly, compared to several other fine tourist destination countries I could mention.
I am an Anglophile. Without P.D. James, Lindsey Davis, Josephine Tey, Laurence Olivier, Vera Lynn, Ted Heath, Norrie Paramor, Frank Chacksfield, Acker Bilk, Frederick Ashton, Cecil Beaton, Penelope Keith, Greer Garson, Patricia Morison, Michael Rennie, Cedric Gibbons, Don Lusher, the BBC, Christopher Hitchens, "The Bridal Path", Douglas Reeman, C.S. Forester and Commander Whitehead, you can have the 20th Century.
Did I mention "The Guns of Navarone", "Ice Station Zebra", James Bond, Philip Marlowe and "The Saint"?

Nice land, very good people however retarded politically. Have committed many atrocities around the world some of them are being blamed upon the United States for trying to bring peace when the English people terribly failed more than 50 years ago! Educate yourself about the history of Palestine and Israel, Iraq, India (now split into India, Pakistan and Bangladesh), Africa, North America etc...what legacy the English people have left around the world??? none but wars, poverty and destruction. They consider themselves powerful under the protective shadow of the United States which they even hate silently. England equals Hypocrisy and Mediocrity.

"Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" and butter.

Edit: I spent a semester in London and have been to the UK many times. I find the people to be either super nice or super rude, very few in the middle (majority super nice), generally energetic and accepting of different points of view when respectfully expressed. My overall impression is very good.

I think of good things, particularly glory, confidence, and strength.

They showed the world that in WW2, especially in the bombing of London. At one particular point after Paris's drastic fall, Britain fought alone.

The person that comes to mind is Winston Churchill, who refused to let his country be dominated by Nazi's.

I am an America but Great Britain has been one of our longest term allies in world history.

They make me proud to be English. To be born in a country that was the cradle of industry, a land of inventors and innovation, a land that has stood brave and unconquered for over a thousand years, is a blessing indeed.
