While I was on the internet today something must have happened and things were downloaded onto my computer. I removed them in the Add/Remove programs list but ever since I keep getting pop ups saying I have viruses, spyware, malware etc. I know I have none of these things as my computer is protected by Norton. I ran a full scan today anyway which showed no threats of any kind but I cant get rid of these bloody pop up balloons!!!!! If I click on them they open up a website asking me to download spyware /malware removal software. I really want to get rid of them because they are driving me nuts but cant! Tried to do a system restore to yesterday but that wont work either. It says Restore Incomplete but gives no reason. Any ideas?

Hi nats,

As you can see from the popups you're getting, Norton doesn't protect you against everything.

Here's a link for the AVG Anti-Spyware that was recommended.

It will only update automatically for the first 30 days, so you'll need to remember to update it yourself. (There are usually updates available every day.)

DONT PANIC :)

First of all... which version of Norton are you using (is it complete package- firewall, antivirus, and anti-spyware... if not you can upgrade so you can get all protection in one).

I ask this because if it is spyware / adware and your Norton is an older version that only handles malware in the virus, worm, family... then you'll need another program to rid those things.

OK So... the first thing force an update of the Norton program, turn off system restore (you will reenable it later when you are sure your clean and this will create a clean restore point - right-click my computer, properties, restore... ). once you force the update make sure you are closed out of any programs, especially your browser.. and perform a complete scan.

Download Spybot S&D from http://www.safer-networking.org that IS the vendors website and not some third party who may give you a bad version... this program will scan for, remove, and protect against spyware / adware. (if your norton doesnt).
reboot.

You should be right as rain then.
Good Luck

You have some sort of malware that Norton isn't detecting. This is not unusual. You're only partially protected by Norton. Many people find that they are better protected by using a combination of freeware products.

Anyway, you will continue to have problems if
A) you use Internet Explorer (IE) as you browser and
B) your Spyware is not completely removing the entries.

I would suggest that you use Mozilla Firefox as your browser.

You should also run more than one Spyware program, and keep them updated.

I use Ad-Aware, Spybot Search & Destroy, SUPER AntiSpyware, and Spyware Blaster. They are all free and you can get them from www.download.com, www.pcworld.com, or www.tucows.com.

It's safe to use multiple Spyware products, but you should only use one anti-virus at a time.

Download Ccleaner, its free software and brilliant for keeping your computer up and running good. After downloading it on the left hand side you have 4 choices, 1st click into Cleaner then Analise, after it has finished scanning, click on run cleaner, that will clean up all the rubbish hanging around on your p.c, next click on Registry on the left, then scan for issues, after the scan click fix all problems, it will ask if you want to back up your registry click yes, it will be saved to your documents, then click clean all. This is really a brilliant Programme, highly rated and best of all its free. Do the scans i described above once a weak and your p.c should run nice and smooth.

What you have is malware. The first thing you should do is to turn off "System Restore" because allot of these types of software can hide in a "Restore" point.

Second, run a couple of good sypware/malware scans. I like Spybot and Adaware. Here are their url's.

Adaware
