Approx 10miles is the highest they ever reach, but most clouds responsible for our bad weather are less than 2 miles up.

Typically the highest clouds are near the tropopause, the area between the troposphere and the stratosphere. These are usually cirrus, which occur at about 10 km or so, or they can be cumulonimbus (thunderstorms), which tend to "anvil out" at the tropopause. This is usually around 12 km. However, it is very high in the tropics due to the less dense warm air, and they can reach heights of 18 km. This sometimes happens with severe storms in the middle latitudes, but is not very common.

In polar regions, there is a type of cloud called a noctilucent cloud which forms in the stratosphere and even the mesosphere. These are the highest clouds in the atmosphere, with typical heights between 80 km and 100 km. They are very interesting, especially around sunset, because they stay light long after the sun goes down due to their height in the atmosphere.

The top of Cumulonimbus cloud can reach as far as 16 to 17 Kms height in tropics particularly in summer.I have seen this much height many times in RHI Mode (Vertical cross section of the atmosphere) of the radar while taking radar observations.
