I think it's a sign of respect to use these forms of addressing a person, what do you think?

I agree, it's a sign of respect. I was raised hearing my parents use the terms, however they never 'made' me use them...I just did from their examples. I still do it today. I have met several people that do not like to be called ma'am or sir, so out of further respect, I refrain from using the terms when I address them.

I do agree with many people that using those terms is a sourthern thing; I can't argue because I am born and bred Texan.

Yes I was, but my parents are old fashioned cow people and thats how they raised me. It is respectful. I always refer to people as yes ma'am or sir. I wish more people were like that these days.

I was actually raised to address men and women as Mr. and Miss or Mrs....but I never do it..lol! I can usually get away with it because I'm just an all around nice person anyways...

I grew up a military brat. I had to. Married into the military and the kids are raised that way also. Only out of respect for others

No, I wasn't. And I don't like it when people call me "ma'am". I know its supposed to be polite, but it makes me feel OLD!

i think it is cool. i want my kids to do it until they're like...4 or 5. then its kinda unnecessary, lol. My family grew up in Georgia, so they all do it, but I get away without saying it whenever I go visit them because i was born and raised in California, whoo hooo!
